The Governing Council of Salem University Nigeria, on Saturday, January 16 2021 appointed Professor Alewo Johnson Akubo as the new Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the revered institution. The appointment of Prof. Alewo Johnson Akubo as the new and 4th VC of the university was announced during the institution’s 17th Governing Council Meeting in Abuja. This followed the expiration of the tenure of Prof. Dorcas Oluwade, who was the third Vice-Chancellor of the University.
Prof. Alewo Johnson Akubo, is a professor of Development Sociology. He was born on April 13, 1973, at Ayingba, in the present-day Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State. He had his primary education at the famous Roman Catholic Mission Primary School, Ayingba (1978-1983), and later attended Community Secondary Commercial College, Ayingba/Boys Secondary School Ochaja (1984-1988). Despite the challenges of his time, Akubo’s pulsating craving for all-round education resulted in his pursuit of higher education at the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State where he obtained a B.Sc. in Accounting (1998).
Akubo later had another B.Sc. degree in Sociology (2011). He is a holder of two Master Degrees (M.Sc. Sociology, UniPort and M.Sc. Business Administration, from Salem University (2020). He is also a holder of an MBA (Organizational Leadership from Salem University, Nigeria (2018). God crowned his effort with a PhD degree in Development Sociology (2016). He also has a post-graduate Diploma in Project Management, from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (2005).
Prof. Akubo is married to Mrs Sophia Johnson Akubo, and the marriage is blessed with five children. He has published widely in blind peer review international and local journals as well as contributed to book chapters.
Before his appointment as VC of Salem University, Nigeria, Prof. Akubo had served as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the institution. He had also served as the Dean, College of Management and Social Sciences (CMSS), of the institution; member, Governing Council, Salem University, Nigeria (2016-2020); member core management Team, Salem University, Nigeria (2016 till date); member, Extended Management, Salem University (2016 till date); Director/Head, Salem Pre-versity College; Director, Salem Business School, Lokoja; Deputy Director, Academic Planning, Salem University, Nigeria; Coordinator, Mass Communication Department, Salem University (2016); Head, Quality Assurance, Salem University, Nigeria (2017-2018); Chairman, Projects Committee, Salem University, Nigeria and Coordinating Chaplain, Chapel of Peace, Salem University, Nigeria. Prof. Akubo is currently a Facilitator/Project Supervisor, Faculty of Social Sciences, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Lokoja Study Centre and External Examiner, Department of Sociology, Kogi State University, Ayingba.
Prof. Akubo took over the cudgel of the leadership of the University on Monday, January 18, 2021. His tenure as the Dean of CMSS and Head of other offices of the university enumerated above witnessed positive transformations.
His tenure as the new VC of Salem University, Nigeria, in line with the vision of the Founder of the institution, Dr Sam Amaga, is expected to effectively position the institution as a citadel of academic excellence and academic-driven human capital development, for global impact and leadership.
