The College of education is in tune with Salem University’s mission of transformational academic revolution as well as national development needs. It is established to ensure that “Global Leaders” are provided with requisite skills and knowledge that will enhance excellent performance in the education management upon graduation. Thus, our graduates are able to contribute meaningfully to the development at all levels and in every aspect of national and international life.

AIMS/OBJECTIVE OF THE COLLEGE

The general aims and objectives of the College of Education are in consonance with the realisation of national needs and aspirations vis-à-vis personal and national development. The graduates must, therefore, be resourceful, creative, knowledgeable and able to perform the following functions:

  1. To demonstrate prospective teachers with proper leadership qualities.
  2. To exhibit the knowledge, skills, and attitudes which will enable them to contribute to the growth and development of their communities in particular, and their nation in general.
  3. To be able to exhibit sound mastery of their subject areas and the ability to impart such knowledge to their students.
  4. To professionally show mastery of problem solving skills.
  5. To be highly motivated, conscientious and efficient classroom teachers for all levels of our Education System.
  6. To be able to fit into the social life of the community and society at large and enhance their commitment to national objectives.
  7. To internalise the intellectual and professional background, adequate for their alignment and to make them adaptable to any changing situation, not only in the life of their country but also in the world in general.

Basic Admission Requirements and Expected Duration of the Programmes

Candidates are admitted into the degree programmes in any of the following three ways:

  1. The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)
  2. Direct Entry
  3. Inter-University Transfer

 

UTME Entry Mode

In addition to acceptable passes in UTME, candidates must obtain at credit level passes in the Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) final year examination or West African School Certificate (WASC)/GCE, NECO, NABTEB ‘0’ Level in five subjects, including Mathematics and English Language. Candidates studying sciences and arts subjects must obtain credit level passes in those subjects.

Direct Entry Mode

Any one of the following qualifications is admissible for the three (3) years Education Degree programmes. In addition, the candidate must possess five credit passes in five subjects at Senior Secondary  School Certificate Examination (SSCE) of West African Examination Council (WAEC), NECO, or NABTEB ‘0’ Level which must include Mathematics, English and three other relevant subjects. For direct entry, candidates must have:

  1. A pass at merit level in a relevant Diploma Programme (provided the 0/L requirements are satisfied).
  2. Two (2) passes in relevant subject areas at Advanced level.
  3. Passes in two (2) major subjects in relevant areas in the NCE.
  4. Two (2) passes at the IJMB (Interim Joint Matriculation Board) examination or Cambridge Moderated Schools of Basic Studies Terminal Examinations or International Baccalaureate from a recognised institution.
  5. For B.Ed (Technology) Programme: holders of NCE, City and Guilds as well as OND and NBC/NTC Certificates, may be admitted.

 Inter-University Transfer Mode  

Students can transfer into 200-Level courses provided they have the relevant qualifications. Universities are to satisfy themselves that the grades obtained by such candidates are acceptable.
