Tell us about yourself and your journey since graduating from Salem University.
My name is Mary Funto Ogunkola. I graduated with First Class Honours in Accounting from Salem University in 2019. After graduation, I pursued my professional certification and became a chartered accountant in 2022. I’m currently working with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), where I contribute to national revenue administration and financial policy implementation.
How did Salem University prepare you for life after graduation?
Salem University laid a solid academic and spiritual foundation for me. The quality of teaching, emphasis on discipline, and godly values helped shape my mindset for excellence. I learned not only the technical aspects of accounting but also the ethical standards required in professional practice. These values have been instrumental in my journey so far.
What has been your biggest achievement since graduation?
Becoming a chartered accountant in 2022 was a major milestone for me. It was the result of hard work, focus, and perseverance. Also, securing a role at FIRS, one of Nigeria’s foremost government agencies, has been a rewarding part of my career journey.
What advice would you give to current and prospective students of Salem University?
Take your academics seriously and embrace the core values that Salem stands for. The discipline, leadership skills, and spiritual grounding you gain here will distinguish you wherever you go. Stay focused, set clear goals, and always strive for excellence.
What are your future aspirations?
I aim to become a strategic leader in public finance and taxation. I also hope to mentor young professionals and contribute to policies that enhance financial transparency and national development.
