PHILOSOPHY, MANDATE AND OBJECTIVES OF SALEM UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF POST GRADUATE STUDIES

1.1 Philosophy
The philosophy of the Salem University School of Postgraduate Studies is to cultivate the atmosphere of robust creativity, rigour and excellence in the conduct of Postgraduate Studies. Consequently, sound and competitive research and creativity shall be enthroned.

1.2 Mandate of the School of Postgraduate Studies.
With strict adherence to the NUC postgraduate studies benchmark, Salem University Postgraduate School shall pursue the followings:

  • The design of the Postgraduate programmes of the University including admission into, planning, execution, coordination, administration, and certification of the Postgraduate programmes.
  • Strive for appropriate updated facilities for Postgraduate work, and to regulate the disbursement of funds allocated for Postgraduate work.
  • Provide for the regulation and enhancement of the quality of Postgraduate instruction and research in the University including educational exchange and contract within and outside Nigeria.
  • To monitor and evaluate the progress of work and to report same to Senate regularly.
  • To create awareness about the Postgraduate activities of the University with a view to attracting enrolment, sponsorship, grants, partnership/joint ventures and training from governments, foundations, individuals and other bodies, locally and globally.

 

1.3 Objectives
In line with the NUC postgraduate studies benchmark, the main objective of Salem University School of Postgraduate Studies is to provide training in research for those whose future careers reside in teaching, research and leadership at the University, other institutions of higher learning, and those who may have to operate in research and development areas of both the public and private sectors of the economy globally.

Postgraduate Diploma Programmes: Postgraduate Diploma Programmes usually include coursework with examinations and long essay or research project reports. Such programmes may be full-time or part-time.

Master’s Degree Programmes: All master’s Degree programmes consist of a coursework with written examinations. These programmes may be part –time or full time but involve a research thesis and an oral defence of such a research work.

Doctor of Philosophy Degree (PhD) programmes: All PhD Degree Programmes shall have coursework with written examinations. a research dissertation that involves oral defence and requires the participation of an external examiner.

 

3.0 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
a)Postgraduate Diploma
i. A first degree in the relevant/related subject of Salem University or any other University recognized by senate of this University.
ii. HND or any other recognized equivalent qualification in the relevant/related subject with a minimum of lower credit and having acceptable post- qualification experience.
iii. A professional qualification in a related discipline with acceptable post-qualification experience.
iv. The Department may fix special entry requirement (s) subject to approval of the Board of Postgraduate Studies and Senate.
b) Masters Degrees
i. A first degree in the relevant subject, with a minimum of second-class honours, of Salem University or any other University recognized by Senate of this University.
c) Doctor of Philosophy
A master in the relevant/related subject, ordinarily with a B average grade, of the Salem University or any other University recognized by Senate of this University.

4.0 DURATION OF DEGREE/DIPLOMA PROGRAMME
a) Postgraduate Diploma
Postgraduate Diploma Programme shall be of one year minimum, two years maximum duration.

b) Master’s Degree
Master’s Degree Programmes shall ordinarily be of one-year minimum duration for full- time (Professional programmes) candidates. The duration shall not ordinarily exceed three years. The exact duration however depends on the programme as spelt out hereafter in the document.
c) Doctoral Degree
Ph.D. Degree programmes shall ordinarily be of three years minimum duration. The duration shall not exceed five years for full- time.
